iCloud Drive can sync your files over cellular data when you’re not on Wi-Fi, quietly using your mobile data allowance. Here’s how to stop iCloud Drive from using mobile data on your iPhone.
Option 1: Turn Off Cellular Data for iCloud Drive
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap your Apple Account name at the top (or Apple ID).
- Tap iCloud.
- Tap iCloud Drive (you may need to tap Saved to iCloud first on newer iOS versions).
- Turn off Use Cellular Data.
With this off, iCloud Drive only syncs when you’re connected to Wi-Fi.
Option 2: Stop Syncing This iPhone via iCloud Drive
If you want to fully disable iCloud Drive syncing on the device:
- Open Settings > your Apple Account > iCloud.
- Tap iCloud Drive (or Saved to iCloud > iCloud Drive).
- Turn off Sync this iPhone.
Your files will no longer sync to or from this iPhone over any connection.
Why Disable iCloud Mobile Data?
- Avoid overages: Large photos, videos, and documents can consume cellular data quickly.
- Save battery: Background syncing over cellular uses more power.
- Control syncing: Wi-Fi-only syncing keeps your data plan for the things you choose.
Checklist
- Open Settings > Apple Account > iCloud > iCloud Drive.
- Turn off Use Cellular Data to keep syncing Wi-Fi only.
- Or turn off Sync this iPhone to stop iCloud Drive syncing entirely.
