Quickly check your Mac’s battery status and health using built-in tools in macOS Tahoe.
View Battery Status in Menu Bar
Show battery percentage in the top-right corner of your screen.
- Click the Apple menu → System Settings.
- Go to Desktop & Dock → Menu Bar.
- Click Battery.
- Turn on Show Percentage to display remaining battery as a number.
Check Battery Health and Cycle Count
View your battery’s condition and how many charge cycles it has experienced.
Method 1: About This Mac
- Click the Apple menu → About This Mac.
- Click System Report.
- Under Hardware, select Power.
- Review the following fields:
- Condition: Shows Normal, Recommended, or Service Needed
- Cycle Count: Total charge cycles (compare to your Mac’s maximum)
- Full Charge Capacity: Current maximum capacity vs. original
Method 2: Terminal Command
Open Terminal and run:
pmset -g batt
This shows:
- InternalBattery-0: Battery name and ID
- Capacity (mWh): Current charge level
- fullChgCap: Fully charged capacity
- maxCap: Maximum capacity (original design capacity)
- Amnt (mA): Current current draw
- Voltage (mV): Current voltage
Check Battery Usage History
View recent battery drain patterns and estimated remaining time.
pmset -g log | grep -i "power"
This shows:
- Battery discharge rates
- Wake/sleep events
- App activity affecting battery
Estimated Battery Life
macOS Tahoe automatically calculates remaining battery time based on current usage.
- Look at the battery icon in the menu bar.
- Hover over the icon to see:
- Time remaining: Estimate until fully charged or drained
- Source: “Charging…” or “Power_adapter”
- Battery health: “Normal” or service recommendation
Battery Health indicators
macOS Tahoe displays battery condition levels:
- Normal: Battery is functioning properly
- Recommended: Battery may need service soon
- Service Needed: Battery should be checked by Apple or an authorized provider
